Programs at Long

Accelerated Reader

The Accelerated Reader Program is one in which students are placed in their correct reading range and are allowed to read trade books within this range, after which they take tests on the computer.  This program has been very successful, showing students that reading can be interesting and fun while it increases their reading ability.  It has been responsible for a three-fold increase in our library circulation.

 Accelerated Math

The Accelerated Math Program is a highly individualized program in which the student is placed in a "library" of math skills at his/her correct level.  Computer-generated practice sheets on skills selected by the teacher are used, and they allow a self-paced program for each student.  This program is successful for the students who need remedial work, as well as for those who need to be challenged.

Thinking Maps

Thinking Maps are used at all schools in the Chesterfield County School District.  There are eight maps which focus on eight different types of thinking.  These maps are excellent devices for use in all subject areas; they aid students in focusing on information that is important to the task at hand.

Character Education

At Long, specific character traits are introduced over the intercom by the principal and subsequently discussed in advisory classes.  Students who exemplify a particular trait are recognized.

Enrichment

At Long, teachers and students are involved in enrichment activities.  Teachers come together as a group to discuss curriculum, instructional strategies, student's achievement and development. Community leaders  are invited to come to speak to the students at Long on various topics that will enrich their lives.  Enrichment dates are included in the calendar of events.
