7th Grade Talent Search
Students must live in or attend a school, public or private, or home school within TIP's 16-state Talent Search region. Seventh grade students must have scored at the 95th percentile or higher on the PACT test to be eligible to participate. Each participant who completes the SAT or ACT will receive the following:
Testing Experience: The knowledge and experience of taking an out-of-level test like the SAT or ACT is the primary benefit of the Talent Search. Students have an opportunity to build their test-taking skills--skills they will continue to need and use as they advance through school.
Student Counseling Guide: The Student Counseling Guide discusses the SAT and ACT-what they are and how to prepare for them. It also explains how a student's results can be interpreted, summarizes the results of the Talent Search, and provides an introduction to educational options worth considering.
Educational Opportunity Guide: The Educational Opportunity Guide lists and describes over 400 summer and academic year programs for academically gifted students.
Merit Packet which includes the following:
Results Summary--allows students to compare their achievement level with other Talent Search participants who completed the SAT or ACT.
Certificate of Merit--for participation in the Talent Search.
Insights--a four-year biannual newsletter that features articles and information for TIP participants.
College Guide: The College Guide magazine is sent to participants during their 10th grade year.
South Carolina Junior Scholars Program
The South Carolina Junior Scholars Program was developed by the State Department of Education during the 1985-86 school year to identify eighth-grade students with exceptional academic talent and to determine strategies for their inclusion in special programs.
The program includes a process for screening a potential talent pool of students, identifying and recognizing those students with exceptionally high scholastic achievement and intellectual ability, and sponsoring summer opportunities in collaboration with participating South Carolina colleges and universities.
Students who qualify for this special recognition will be recognized in local awards ceremonies, receive an Award of Merit from the State Department of Education, and be invited to attend summer opportunities at participating South Carolina colleges and universities.
To be eligible, students must attend school in South Carolina and be enrolled in the eighth grade. Students must have scored advanced/proficient in English language arts and mathematics on the Palmetto Achievement Challenge Test (PACT).
To be identified, students who score greater than or equal to 50 on the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test (PSAT) in verbal, math, or writing will be identified as South Carolina Junior Scholars.
