Attendance
Students must be present in class the equivalent of 170 days (1 unit course) or the equivalent of 85 days (1/2 unit course). Students may have no more than 10 absences for a 1 unit course or 5 absences for a 1/2 unit course in order to receive credit. Students must attend at least 40 minutes of a 53 minute class to be counted present.

Note: All absences, both excused and unexcused, are included in this total.

Any student who has been absent must report to the attendance clerk with an excuse from a parent and/or doctor. Absences will be judged excused/unexcused/unlawful in the office each morning before school. Lawful absences allow a student to make up missed assignments. No written excuse will be accepted after 10 days following an absence. Failure to provide written documentation for an absence will result in an *unlawful absence and loss of credit.

*Unlawful absences can be made up by attending Saturday School. Approximately four Saturday schools per semester will be offered.

Parents should not sign students out of school unless the student has a medical, dental, or legal appointment, or a death in the family. Absences for reasons other than the above shall be considered unexcused unless there is prior approval by the school administration. In case of an emergency or unusual need to leave campus, students should follow the procedures outline below.

  1. A note written by the parents should be presented to the main office between 7:30 and 7:55 AM.
  2. Each note should include the student's full name, grade, parent signature, and a telephone number where the parent can be reached for verification of the early dismissal. Also, the reason or purpose of the request must be stated.
  3. Dismissal request should be arranged to coincide with the end of a regular class period.
  4. Students must sign out in the main office before leaving the school grounds.
  5. Students, upon returning to school, must sign in at the main office.

A parent's request for a student to be allowed to leave school early will not be excused for an absence. Upon verification of an early dismissal request, the student will be permitted to leave campus. It shall be the responsibility of the parent/student to furnish the school with an excuse explaining his/her absence resulting from an early release from school.

Seniors may be granted early dismissal from school by the administration if certain criteria are met and parents approve. Failure to maintain a good discipline record, a good attendance record, or a good academic record will result in loss of the early dismissal privilege.

  Graduation Policy
Each student who qualifies for a State Certificate or a South Carolina High School Diploma will be eligible to participate in the graduation ceremonies at the end of the regular school year.  All seniors may order caps and gowns, announcements, senior keys, diploma covers, and other senior items, but such purchases do not ensure that a student will graduate or be allowed to participate in graduation.  No senior who has outstanding obligations will be presented a diploma until these obligations are are paid.
