Second Grade Trip to the State Park
Second grade classes attended a field trip to Cheraw State Park during the last week of October. While there, the students participated in a pond study where they got to find and observe animal life inside the water. The students also took a tour down the boardwalk with the rangers where they spot animals such as a yellow bellied turtle, a water spider, and a duck. Along with that, students were involved in a scavenger hunt of various nature items, they created leaf-rubbing artwork, and they observed the characteristics of various trees. The trip was a great follow up of their science unit about animals and their environment.                                 click for photos

"Tra, la, la, la..."  The Singing Giant
Students in Mrs. Tomberlin's second grade class performed a play entitled The Singing Giant for their classmates , Mrs. Jackson and Mrs. Davis. As an extension of our literacy group, these students decided to act out the play. They chose their character and created their props and scene design. For several days, they worked together sharing ideas and rehearsing their parts.

As seen in the photograph- the babies (Jamya Henderson and Phillip Locklear), Grandpa ( DyJon Harrington), Mom (Qu'Shariya Decessard), sister, (Lynnishia Chapman), Narrator (Brandon Boone), and The Singing Giant (Journey Guinn) all portrayed their characters with wit and enthusiasm . Their audience burst into laughter as the Giant broke out in song.."I love to sing, oh I love to sing. Tra la la la" and as the babies cried loudly-"Wa Wa Wa Wa". The audience was very respectful to the cast of stars and are eager to perform a play of their own. Readers Theatre is just one of the many ways we encourage reading and practice our reading strategies. It also allows the students to practice the life skill of cooperation.

New Computer Program...  Compass Learning
Students at Cheraw Primary attend Compass Learning Lab twice a week.  There, the students work on their own personal learning path filled with math and language arts activities that are engaging and educational.  The interactive products of Compass Learning meet South Carolina state standards and are based on current scientific research into how students think and learn.  Teachers monitor their students and assign tasks that are appropriate for the individual child.  This is just another way that Chesterfield County is using technology to enhance and build a better future.

Mrs. Hitesman's Dioramas                                    click for photos
Students from Mrs. Hitesman's second grade class worked in small groups to create miniature environments that they presented to their classmates on Friday, September 19, 2008. Prior to the project, they learned about each environment in class, which is a South Carolina State Standard for Science in second grade. They used some materials from the outdoors, figurines that were purchased, and craft materials in the classroom to create their dioramas. Each environment displayed their own physical characteristics including plant life, animal life, etc. The students had to make sure their environment included the necessities for their animals survival. All of the environments had to have food, shelter, water, air, and space for their animals. Overall, Mrs. Hitesman was very impressed with their hard work and believed their finished projects looked amazing!
