Curricular Programs -
Heterogeneous grouping is utilized
throughout the grade levels. Learning is encouraged through a
curriculum that is rich, not only in writing activities, but also
in speaking and listening activities. Deeply embedded in our curriculum
is a balanced literacy philosophy, as well as the use of innovative
instructional approaches which complement individual learning
styles.
Innovative Programs
- CDEPP
(Child Development Education Pilot Program) for 40 eligible students, All-Day Kindergarten, Literacy Groups,
Compass Learning
Lab, Computer Writing Lab, Accelerated Reader, Artist-In-Education,
School-Wide Mail System, School Television Station (WCPS), Life
Skills Character Education Program, and the Good Manners Program
reinforce the curriculum. Student books are published in the school's
publishing center. CDEPP and kindergarten teachers also prepare learning
packets and deliver them on home visits prior to the beginning
of school.
Awards -
CPS is fully accredited and is an Exemplary Writing Award Winner. The school has
received the Exemplary Writing Award for 97-98, 98-99, 00-01, and 03-06. CPS has also received
the Literacy Spot Award and achieved deregulation status. Cheraw Primary has
previously received the School Incentive Award.
Student/Teacher Ratio - Ranges from 15:1 to 21:1.
Special Services - Speech therapy, ABT occupational and physical
therapy is provided as needed. Special
classes are provided for identified students in preschool through second grade.
Athletic Activities
-Certified physical education
teachers provide instruction on a weekly basis and organize a
field day for each grade level in the spring. Students in the
exceptional programs also participate in Special Olympics.
Library/Media Center
- The media center has over 10,000
volumes. It has a computerized system for the card catalog and circulation. Accelerated Reader is available for students.
Accreditation
- Cheraw Primary School has an all-clear
status with the Accreditation Section of the State Department
of Education and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. Our
school met AYP in 07-08.
Parent Participation - Cheraw Primary has an active
PTO. Parent volunteers tutor students, assist teachers, and supervise
special activities. The guidance counselor coordinates parent
workshops.
Assembly Programs - Each grade level performs a program
during the year directed by the music teacher, art teacher, physical
education teacher and the librarian.
Extracurricular Activities - Field trips, visits by
children's authors and illustrators, and an After-School Care
program are provided.
